Wollongong climate & safety information
How the Wollongong climate behaves through the seasons, plus quick links to official safety services for life-or-property decisions.
Wollongong climate at a glance
Wollongong sits 80 km south of Sydney on a narrow coastal strip pinned between the Tasman Sea and the Illawarra Escarpment. That geography drives almost every quirk of the local weather.
Summer (Dec–Feb)
Average maximum 25–26 °C, overnight minimum around 18 °C. Humid east coast lows can drop heavy rain; afternoon nor-easters cool the beaches but build chop offshore.
Autumn (Mar–May)
The wettest season, with average monthly rainfall over 130 mm. Watch for east coast lows that flood the escarpment foothills around Mt Keira and Mt Kembla.
Winter (Jun–Aug)
Mild for Australia. 17 °C days, 9 °C nights. Cold southerly busters can drop temps fast; clear westerlies bring crisp mornings ideal for the escarpment lookouts.
Spring (Sep–Nov)
Warming days, increasing sea breeze. Bushfire danger climbs as westerlies dry out the ranges, so check the RFS Illawarra/Shoalhaven fire danger before any back-country plans.
Life-safety sources: for severe weather, fire, flood and marine warnings always use the official services. BOM NSW warnings, NSW SES storm & flood hazards, NSW RFS fire danger, BOM Port Kembla tides, ARPANSA live UV. Emergency: Triple Zero (000).
Weather by suburb: Wollongong & Illawarra
Localised forecasts, radar and conditions for the suburbs that line Wollongong and the Illawarra. Coastal suburbs see more wind and swell; escarpment suburbs see more rain and cloud.
